Acid Rain Effects on Life Part I

Acid Rain Effects on Life Part I

Summary

Air pollution causes acid rain, and acid rain may cause varies diseases of human, animal and vegetation. Experts have developed ways to overcome the bad effects, in developed countries Flue Gas Desilfurization (FGD) is able to neutralize sulfur before it reaches the air. In less developed countries is campaigned the Free Car-Day to reduce the energy and public transportation policies. The application of public transportation policy will reduce the number of vehicles in the street.

Acid Rain

Air pollution is caused by various sources, such as written in my previous hubs Forest Burn and Air Pollution, namely by forest fires, factories emissions in the industry, CO2 emissions of the vehicle, and sulfide gas produced in the process of decomposition or decay of organic materials. Such the toxic gases accumulate in the atmosphere and then fall along with the water rain.

For the life of human, animal, and vegetation acid rain as one of the serious problems. Acid rain affects on the environment. So that it is needed to be addressed in an integrated manner. Innovation measures and equipmenti are applied to neutralize pollutants. In some developed countries as in United States experts have utilised Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD). The FGDis able to neutralize the sulfur before it reaches the air.
Efforts to Overcome

Out of seminars and research development to seek the best ways to overcome the bad effect of acid rain are found several ways, they are : Using minimal pollutant containing fuels that is fuel with less pollutants; minimize the formation of pollutants during combustion; Capture pollutants from the exhaust gas; and minimize the energy usage.

-Use Fuel with minimum Sulfur content
The content of sulfur in fuel is various. The problem is that up to now, many countries are very dependent on oil and coal, while oil is a source of fuel with a high sulfur content.
The use of natural gas would reduce emissions of acid-forming substances, but this can add to the gas leak methane emissions. Another effort is to use a non-sulfur fuel such as methanol, ethanol and hydrogen. However, replacement of these fuels must be done carefully, otherwise it would cause other problems. For example, the combustion of methanol produces two to five times the formaldehyde than burning gasoline. This substance has carcinogenic properties (cancer triggers).

- Reducing the sulfur content before burning Level of sulfur content in fuel can be reduced by applying a particular technology during the production process. Such the process is washing, that the coal is free of sand, soil and other debris, and reducing the sulfur content in the form of pyrite (sulfur in form of iron sulfide up to 50-90%.

Hopefully the reader would like to wait for the continuation of this article on the effort to reduce acid rain, thank you, and the latest development is the burning of forest or forest on fire. It happened because of  lack of law enforcement. Please read it to add our understanding on ecology. thank you.
